Epilepsy Advocacy Day at the Capital

Dear Friend of the Foundation,

The Epilepsy Foundation of Kentuckiana staff are busy planning programs and events for 2020. One event to bring to your attention is our upcoming Epilepsy Advocacy Day. We invite you and your family to join us for this important annual event at the Capitol Annex in Frankfort on Tuesday, February 25, 2020. this is  a great opportunity to come together with others to talk with your elected officials about the impact epilepsy has on you and your family.

I will never forget the first time I had the opportunity to do this - sure, I was nervous, but I knew there was no one better to tell my daughter's epilepsy story than me. It was so empowering. I knew right then that our epilepsy story mattered. Your epilepsy story matters too, and it can help make a difference for you and the over 153,000 children and adults living with epilepsy in Kentuckiana. The EFKY will take care of setting up appointments with your legislators, help you get to your scheduled meetings, and attend meetings with you. You will have the opportunity to sit in on committee hearings, where proposed legislation will be discussed and see laws being passed by lawmakers in their respective chambers, just like we did with the Seizure Smart Schools legislation last year! Your voice is vitally important in helping us improve the lives of those battling this potentially life-threatening neurological disease.

Sincerely,
Epilepsy Foundation of Kentuckiana Staff

Please contact Deb McGrath, Executive Director at 502-907-1532 / 866-275-1078 x14 / dmcgrath@efky.org for more information.

The Epilepsy Message

  • Epilepsy is a serious public health condition that can have a devastating impact on people with the disorder and their families.
  • Data from the Centers for Disease Control indicates that the impact of seizures on quality of life is comparable to the impact reported by individuals with arthritis, heart problems and cancer.
  • We need additional funding for key federal programs and we need improved access to health care services to combat this problem.

Speak Up, Speak Out allows us to:
  • Make our voices heard in Congress in a unified manner;
  • Keep informed on important legislative issues; and
  • Share personal stories and experiences of epilepsy with our legislators.

Kids Speak Out is an annual event.  The Epilepsy Foundation of Kentuckiana is always looking for more outgoing advocates to attend.  If you are interested, please contact Deb McGrath, Executive Director, dmcgrath@efky.org for more information and visit the the National Epilepsy Foundation website.
